More than 850 teachers from five districts of West Bengal will be taking initiatives to save children from tobacco products. In this regard, workshops were organized by the Education Department, West Bengal (WB) for teachers of Secondary and Higher Schools. These workshops were held in Kolkata, Barrackpore, Paschim Bardhaman, Siliguri and Hooghly. Technical support was provided by Sambandh Health Foundation and Narayana Super Speciality Hospital, Howrah.
Education Department, Deputy Chairman State Advisory Council, Dr Arun K Chatterjee said, “Life is short but don’t make it shorter by smoking.”
Sensitization on tobacco epidemic was the main focus of these workshops. Voice of Tobacco Victims (VoTV) doctors from various hospitals in WB talked about health hazards of tobacco in each workshop. Guidelines for Tobacco Free Educational Institutes (ToFEI) were explained in detail for effective compliance. These require no tobacco usage within educational institutions, no sale within 100 yards of schools and mandatory signage in every Educational Institute (EI). The guidelines also require anti-tobacco activities to be conducted in each EI at least every six months such as displaying posters, pledge, debate competitions, essay competitions and other various other activities.
The participants also took an anti-tobacco pledge during the workshop, informed Dr Sourav Datta, Narayana Super Speciality Hospital, Howrah.
