International ORS Day
ORS Day is celebrated every year on 29th July to highlight the importance of ORS as a cost effective method of health intervention. Captain Phillips of the US Army in 1964 first tried oral glucose saline on two cholera patients . Following this, scientists working at the Cholera Research Laboratory, Dhaka and the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Kolkata contributed to the development of modern Oral Rehydration Salt ( ORS) solution.
According to WHO, diarrhoeal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under the age of five years. Most of the people who die from diarrhoea actually die from severe dehydration and fluid loss from the body and it can be prevented by using ORS.
ORS is a life saver and functions by replenishing the fluids and electrolytes lost through diarrhoea and vomiting.
International Tiger Day
It is observed on 29th July every year to raise awareness for tiger conservation. It was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit. The goal of the day is to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.
In our country also 29th July is observed as International Tiger Day. India is the home to nearly 70 % of the tiger population and it leads the world. In 1973, Project Tiger was started in India. This project was started at Jim Corbett National Park.
The objective was to save Royal Bengal Tigers from becoming extinct. This project has been successful in increasing the population of tigers.
The number of tigers has increased from 1200 to around 5000. After seeing the success of Project Tiger, the government updated the Wild Life Protection Act of 1972 . This made sure that along with tigers, other wildlife also gets protected.
