The Keel Laying Ceremony of second of the three advanced stealth frigate (P17A), was conducted in the august presence of Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar, Vice Chief of Naval Staff and Rear Admiral GK Harish, Director General Naval Design, at M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) Kolkata on 24 Jan.
A contract for seven P17A stealth frigates was concluded with M/s Mazagon Dock Ltd. for four ships and with GRSE for three ships in Feb 2015. They are named after the prestigious first major warships ever built in India, which in turn were named after mountain ranges in India, Nilgiri. These ships are state-of-the art guided missile frigates with a displacement of 6670 tonnes and a length of 149 meters.
