The Happiness from a Dandelion
-Arna Kar, 11 years, England
The happiness of a dandelion is something different and unusual, that many do not see because it is a ‘weed’. I actually find it as a hidden delight. It is a unique splendour, compared to sweets, chocolates or a calming song. The dandelion is a weird and wonderful plant, which can make anyone smile on a bad day!
For a child, the enjoyment of blowing away the wispy seeds, and see it gently be lifted by the breeze like a leaf on a river is enough to make them over the moon. An adult may like to step away from their busy lives, and glance at a dandelion. This will bring back childhood memories of playing with nature, the thoughts peacefully flooding over them as they remember how carefree their lives were when they were younger.
A dandelion will make us feel and pay more attention to the nature around us. It can be studied or drawn in careful detail, or we could just count its seeds as they disappear out of sight. Dancing dandelion seeds can be angelic at midday in the calm sunlight, and are very relaxing.
The unique plant is a wish-granter. Like an eyelash, if we close our eyes and make a wish before letting it sway in the wind up to the clouds, they come true. This magic is not known to many, and indeed is a stress-reliever.
Unlike roses which have got thorns, dandelions are pure beauties. Their only weakness is that they are weeds, which doesn't allow people to enjoy them like they should. Dandelions are disliked because they destroy seedlings of other plants and do not allow them to grow out of the soil into the world of nature. This sadly makes dandelions get destroyed, as well as its uncontrollable mysterious and magical happiness.
People are generally too disappointed by not seeing a vibrant colourful garden, bursting with scarlet red tulips, violet hydrangeas and bumble-bee loving sunflowers, because the dandelions destroyed them. This makes most people do not glance at the dandelions for more than a second before deciding to throw them away. They do not realise that if they pick up the dandelions in bunches and blew them away, they would feel like they were clearing out their worries and fears. The feeling overcomes us with joy, and is good for mindfulness.
So next time, instead of thinking about throwing it straight away, spend a few minutes outside or looking through a window at a dandelion. Try and make a wish with it and see if it comes true or just simply admire its simple individual seeds.
You might be surprised by what secrets it holds!!
