India’s $50 billion wedding industry – often touted as “recession-proof” – has been pummelled by the Covid-19 pandemic. Thousands of weddings stand postponed, fresh bookings have plummeted, and industry players don’t see a resumption of grand ceremonies till October.
Destination weddings? Distant dream. Not everyone is cancelling, though: Some couples are going in for online weddings using video-conferencing tools like Zoom and virtual matrimony offerings from the likes of Shaadi.com.
Another option: Small, simple weddings with just 50 people, per the government’s guidelines.
